NEWS RELEASE

9th December 2008

Funding gives mobility to the disabled.

Disability Action Group (DAG) based in North Dorset has seen its fleet of mobility scooters extended this month with the help of Signpost Residents Community Fund.

The community fund, run by Signpost residents, awarded DAG a massive £1,195.00 to purchase a new mobility scooter that will help up to 500 disabled people during its life-time.

Michael Underwood, Chair of Signpost Residents Community Fund presented the cheque to Alan Dunn of DAG. Michael Underwood said, “It’s been a privilege to be able to award this funding to such a worthwhile cause. Many of us take the independence mobility gives for granted and I know that this scooter will give those that use it a lifeline to society and independence.”

Applications to the Signpost Residents Community Fund are welcomed from groups working in all areas of the community. For details please contact The Resource Centre, Signpost House, Sunrise Business Park, Higher Shaftesbury Road, Blandford Forum, DT11 8SA.

Further info;
The Disability Action Group in North Dorset, is a group that provides electric wheelchairs and scooters on a short term loan basis to needy disabled persons. The provision of these vehicles really helps both the long and short term disabled people maintain their independence and assists them to integrate into society; They provide a service that unfortunately is not provided by the NHS. We have often been told by our clients that “the loan of the vehicle has changed their lives”. The running of this service and fundraising is solely done by a dedicated group of volunteers, some of whom are disabled themselves.

E-mail, alan.dun@nddag.co.uk or phone 0779 1232 461

The mobility scooter was purchased from Ensured Mobility.

On Thursday the 3rd December the group made a collection at Tesco’s Blandford and raised £108 this was followed by a collection at Shaftesbury on the 5th which raised £202 and Sturminster Newton on the 7th where £22 was raised.

The group has asked the 5 town councils of North Dorset to Jointly fund the core costs of the group for the forthcoming year, the public appeal is to raise funds for new mobility scooters and equipment which are loaned free of charge to needy disabled persons.

Santa made an early appearance at the Shaftesbury collection and promptly gave a hand to the group by helping with the collecting, for many of the children it was the first appearance of Santa this year, who was greeted with cheers and smiles, The group treasurer Mary Siwek and Secretary Pat Withers tried without any success to persuade Santa to tell them the secret of how he managers to visit all the children in the world on Christmas Eve. Santa said he was pleased to help and enjoyed having a little ride on one of the mobility scooters.

Chairman Alan Dunn said he was delighted that Santa choose to help out with the collections explaining that due to the current financial climate, funding previously available to small charities was very much reduced, so a greater emphasis had to be put on local fund raising. since starting the mobility loan scheme in 2001 the group have helped an estimated 475 disabled persons become mobile and independent by loaning them a piece of equipment.
